About Green Friends Montessori School
Green Friends Montessori School is a not-for-profit educational institution formed in 2016 by a small group of parents and Montessori educators dedicated to peace education and nature-based learning. Green Friends Montessori School is in a renovated single-story house on the property of MA Center Chicago (an organization dedicated to humanitarian and spiritual activities). We have designed our school with the children foremost in our minds. The school also has access to the 140-acre MA Center property, which includes fruit orchards, organic vegetable gardens, a permaculture “food forest,” greenhouses, honeybees, restored prairie, a bluebird nesting box trail, ponds, and Blackberry Creek.
Nature-based Focus
At Green Friends Montessori School, nature studies are interwoven into many curricular areas. We recognize the profound importance of helping youth connect with the nature as they discover their personal identities and place in the world and become positive citizens of their communities and the Earth. Utilizing access to 140 acres of land adjoining the school, the students explore restored prairie, forest groves, agricultural land, and riparian habitat along Blackberry Creek. Hands-on learning is conducted on topics such as habits and ecosystems, animal behavior and lifecycles, phenology, botany, gardening and agriculture, earth science and soils, water quality, and habitat restoration. Elementary students have daily access to the outdoors for nature studies, recreation, and yes, play!
